“I’m probably good to drive,” Allie asserted. She took a deep breath and turned to face Cody. “Thank you for everything tonight. You really were a lifesaver.”

“It has been my pleasure.”

Allie slid around the bench of the booth and stood up, clutching her purse tightly.

“Well, goodnight then.”

Cody looked up and saw Mick at the bar. The expression on his face said it all. You’re an idiot!

“May I walk you to your car?”

“That would be great,” Allie nodded happily. “Thank you.”

Cody escorted her out of the bar, shooting Mick a glare over his shoulder as he did. Mick just grinned. Once outside in the dark cool night, they walked slowly to the blue Fiat, almost as though they were both prolonging the inevitable – goodbye.

“You know, I’d really like to ask you for your number and tell you that I’m going to call you, but I have decided I’m not going to,” admitted Cody once they were stopped at the side of Allie’s car.

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t want you to do, or say anything that you don’t want to. I don’t want you to feel like you should go to dinner with me because you owe me. If you go out with me, on a date, I want you to be excited about it.”

Allie looked up at Cody’s face, and even though it was dark, she could see the sincerity in his eyes. He was handing her control. It was refreshing.

“So, instead,” he continued, “I’m going to do something else. Give me your phone, please?” he grinned.

Allie complied.

“I’m typing in my contact info. Cody Richards. Here is my number. When, and if, you would like me to take you on a date, call me. It’s that simple. And I promise I will be excited.” He handed Allie back her phone.

“Okay,” she agreed. She placed her phone back in her purse and opened the car door.

“Allie?” Cody grabbed hold of the door. “I think that meeting you tonight may have changed my life.”

Her eyes widened and he saw the look of surprise flash across her face. “How?”

“Time will tell. The ball is in your court. Drive home safely.” He leaned in briefly, just long enough to place a simple kiss on her cheek, the same cheek he’d brushed with his thumb as she’d slept. “Goodnight, Allie.”

In somewhat of a daze, Allie pulled onto the highway in her girl car and headed for downtown, and home, Cody definitely on her mind, her hand subconsciously touching her cheek where he’d kissed her. No one could have convinced her as she’d stomped out of the restaurant and far away from Rex that just a few short hours later she’d be swooning over a cowboy. A cowboy? Well, he wore jeans and boots and worked on a ranch. That solidified his cowboy status.

“A cowboy,” she giggled.

Within forty-five minutes she had pulled into the underground parking garage of her apartment building and was in the elevator riding up to her floor, a dorky grin on her face.
